Gay Marriage Ruling

Gay Marriage: It's the Law!

Citizens dancing in the streets with unrestrained joy over the Supreme Court ruling that opens marriage to same sex couples and, as a practical matter, redefines marriage. This is actually happening here in the United States! And the endgame has not yet been reached!

Much needs to be said about this tragedy, but for now, I offer some basic and brief observations.

First, what is really at stake is the authority of Scripture. A glance at Romans 1:21-32 (NAU) establishes that homosexual practice is condemned by God. Verses 24-27 give a vivid description of God’s viewpoint: “Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.” At the end of the day, most advocates of the homosexual lifestyle, whether or not in the context of marriage, don’t care what the Bible says. They reject it out of hand as so much irrelevant, old-fashioned nonsense. This is not a secret; many who practice homosexual behavior are not bashful about declaring this and in fact are zealous recruiters to their sinful lifestyle.

Second, this repudiation of traditional and biblical marriage should not surprise us. It is the logical progression of what has been playing out for many decades in our country. But more than that, this normalization of homosexual practice, at its root, is an age-old expression of the human condition. Romans 1:21-23 (NAU) makes this clear, “For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.”

Third, this is not hand wringing time. God is still on His throne. I may not know exactly what He is up to and may not understand what I see happening in His kingdom. I might even wish He would operate in His world differently. However, I do know His character. Not only is He compassionate, bestowing common grace to all, He is also absolutely sovereign over His universe including all human beings who are creatures made in His image. Contrary to appearances, things are not out of control. And the good news is that we know the final score. God and His church will win. The forces of wickedness will lose. The outcome is not in doubt! I fear Christians have forgotten the iron-clad promise of Matthew 16:18-19 (NAU), "I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19 "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven."

Fourth, in a representative democracy such as ours, citizens bear the responsibility for the laws of the land. So, who is to blame for this national debacle? We, the people, are.

So, we would do well to remember that all mankind must answer to a higher court than the United States Supreme Court, namely the Court of Heaven presided over by one Justice – the one true living Sovereign of the Universe, who is none other than the God of the Bible.
